BIM4Regs is a government initiative that aims to incorporate Building Regulations, planning and health and safety requirements into BIM models. The BIM Task Group, part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, has commissioned a working group to achieve this.
The intention is that regulatory information will be embedded within BIM software so that design consultants can see whether designs comply with the regulations. BIM models will be able to highlight where designs contravene the regulations.
This will be easier to achieve with some types of regulations than others, for example, regulations that require judgment to be used may be difficult to incorporate. The current view is that approximately one third of the relevant regulations could be incorporated into BIM software easily.
