South Africa’s Government hopes to have a revised carbon tax paper ready before the 2012 budget in February, while the tax may be in force from July 2012. They are now in the process of holding industry consultations. The Government intend to implement a “polluter-pays” principle, to use the carbon tax to reduce greenhouse emissions. South Africa is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 and 42 per cent by 2025.
