Four of President Obama’s administration officials testified yesterday at a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on climate change. During the Q&A portion of the hearing, the consideration of nuclear energy as a means to battle climate change was addressed. During the session, Sen. Alexander said, “Why are we ignoring the cheap energy solution to global warming, which is nuclear power?" Chu, who is supportive of incorporating nuclear energy into the climate change fix if it is done safely, acknowledged that all current nuclear plants in the United States are being run safely. Many Republican committee members support the push for nuclear energy, as does Democratic committee member Sen. Carper from Delaware.

With a number of nuclear supporters on the committee, it would not be surprising to see a nuclear title added to the Senate version of the Waxman-Markey climate change legislation, which Boxer expects to release in the coming weeks. If a nuclear title is not in the bill, a number of nuclear amendments can be expected to be introduced when the bill is marked-up in committee.
