Members of the Michigan House of Representatives introduced a bill to expand the list of factors that an insurer is prohibited from considering when issuing automobile insurance. Existing Michigan law already prohibits the use of race, color, creed, marital status, sex or national origin. HB 5000 would add employment status, trade, business, occupation, profession, education level and credit history, or lack thereof, to this list of prohibited factors. Additionally, the bill would outlaw ratings based on the insured’s place of residence or work. Michigan House of Representatives (September 24, 2013).
