On 26 November 2012 the Federal Network Agency announced that German mobile operators have now met their coverage obligation in the 800 MHz band throughout Germany and are therefore entitled to freely use these frequencies. The frequencies for wireless network access in the 800 MHz band as well as the 1.8 GHz, 2.0 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands were auctioned in early 2010. The assignments of the 800 MHz frequencies contained coverage and roll-out obligations in order to make available broadband services in Germany's rural areas.
