After tabling S. 1720 (Patent Transparency and Improvements Act of 2013) last week, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is now scheduled to begin mark-up of the bill at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday April 3, 2014.  You can watch the broadcast live via webcast or view a recording of the hearing afterwards here.

If you missed the hearing last week, take a few minutes to see what members of the Senate Judiciary Committee had to say about the proposed bill.  The recording may be viewed here.  Initial discussion by Senator Leahy begins at the 28:50 mark and continues with Senator Grassley at 41:10.  Additional comments from Senators Feinstein, Hatch, Schumer and Klobuchar follow at 46:27.

Senator Leahy recognized credit unions in his thoughts about the need for patent reform (at 44:15).  On the topic of  patent infringement demands for credit union use of ATM technology, Senator Leahy referred to the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s famous quote, ”I know it when I see it.”  With regard to this type of patent abuse, Senator Leahy said, “I think most of us know it when we see it.”

Andrew Williams at Patent Docs – Biotech & Pharma Patent Law & News Blog – provided a nice recap of the comments offered by Committee members.
