The Canadian Departments of Transport and Natural Resources have proposed Vessel Pollution and Dangerous Chemical Regulations that would prohibit releases of pollutants, including oil, noxious liquids, harmful substances in packaged form, sewage, and garbage, from vessels into the marine environment. The proposals follow the July 2007 enactment of a new Canada Shipping Act and consolidate previous rules on ship pollution and transportation of dangerous goods. They follow the structure of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and International Convention for the Control of Harmful Antifouling Systems. The proposed regulations are open to public comment until December 5, 2011.
