Readers will recall a consultation at the end of last year around the provisions in GIA 2013 to extend, to types of commercial development, the development consent regime. There has been a further announcement on this today.

The plan is for developers of a wide range of commercial developments to be given the option of going down the development consent route rather than making a planning application in the usual way. Residential and retail developments are not included. The key benefit being sold is the "fast track" to consent - within 12 months. Draft regulations are expected in October.

Interestingly, the Government plans to maintain its intention not to bring forward a national policy statement or statements for commercial developments even though the consultation response was in favour of NPS for this type of development.
