The owner of a California condominium complex has reportedly been sentenced by a federal court to four years in prison for conspiring to violate Clean Air Act asbestos work practice standards. U.S. v. Yi, No. 10-793 (C.D. Cal. sentenced 6/6/11). According to court documents, defendant, who is the former president of a company that purchased an 18-building, 204-unit complex in Winnetka for renovation in 2006, (i) ignored prior asbestos tests performed at the construction site, (ii) ignored his prior experience as to the need for a proper asbestos survey, (iii) hired unlicensed workers to remove regulated asbestos, and (iv) failed to warn them of its presence. A federal jury convicted defendant of five felony counts on March 29. See BNA Daily Environment Report, June 8, 2011.
