Lindsay Wilcox’ bad boyfriend decision was not legitimate grounds for her termination as a teacher according to a New Jersey jury.

A private field hockey coach for teenage girls was convicted for crimes associated with child pornography. Ms. Wilcox was his girlfriend at the time he was engaged in this illegal behavior. She was also employed in the Newark Valley Central School District as a P.E. teacher and field hockey coach. The school district fired Ms. Wilcox because she did not report the sexual misconduct. Ms. Wilcox denied having any knowledge of what her former boyfriend had been doing.

A jury in New Jersey returned a verdict in Ms. Wilcox’ favor for $3.5 million. That verdict included $2.1 million for future lost earnings and $1 million for mental anguish and emotional distress.
