In a reversal of policy from the previous Administration, President Obama today announced that he is endorsing state efforts to restrict tailpipe emissions and ordering higher fuel-efficiency standards. While this announcement isn’t unexpected as President Obama is making good on a campaign promise, the timing is not good for the industry. The move was supported by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders. Going forward, President Obama promised to take into account the financial troubles of automakers, being careful not to burden an already fragile auto industry. Let’s hope he keeps his promise. Having visited the North American International Auto Show on Saturday, it is clear the industry has made considerable progress on environmental issues.
