Under the Public Procurement Directive 2004/18/EC, contracting authorities may use an accelerated timetable for tender procedures where there are grounds of urgency. Following the conclusions of the European Council on 12 December 2008 over the current economic crisis, the European Commission confirmed that during 2009-10, the exceptional nature of the current economic crisis might justify the use of the accelerated procedure for major public projects. In practice, authorities will in any event have to consider a timetable that is suited to the nature of the contract in question and this announcement does not change the law in this area.
