Joaquin Almunia spoke at a Commission conference on card, internet and mobile payments. The conference marked the launch of a Green Paper looking at obstacles to the internal market for these payments. Among the problems the Commission has identified are the cost of card transactions to merchants, and markets that are fragmented and not as dynamic as they could be. He looked at how competition has improved in the internet and mobile industries, and said the sector should aim to follow this. Other problems he identified were slow take-up of the Single Euro Payment Area and opacity on fees. (Source: Commission Speaks on Integrating Payments in the EU)
