The coalition has included all 278 environment laws in a list of “red tape” regulations due for public review and, supposedly, for the axe if the sponsoring department can’t justify keeping them. This means that key acts such as the Clean Air Act and the Climate Change Act will now be assessed to establish what impact and restriction they have on business in the UK. The Climate Change Act makes it the duty of the Secretary of State to ensure net UK carbon emissions for all six Kyoto greenhouse gases are at least 80 per cent lower by 2050 than 1990 levels.
