The UK IPO has published a consultation on proposed changes to copyright exceptions as part of the follow up to the recommendations made in the Gowers Review. The proposed changes include: the introduction of a format shifting exception to allow consumers to copy legitimately purchased content to another format; the creation of a new exception for caricature, parody or pastiche; and expansion of the fair dealing exceptions for noncommercial research and private study to cover sound recordings, films and broadcasts. The consultation is open until 8 April 2008.

The UK IPO has published a short guidance note on the new fast-track trade mark examination system that comes into force on 6 April 2008, and will operate in parallel with the current system. The new online trade mark application form is much revised.

The Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (“ITMA”) has withdrawn its application to register TRADE MARK ATTORNEY as a certification trade mark.
