The UK Border Agency (BA) this month called on businesses to take action to prepare for the introduction of the government’s new rules for employing skilled migrant workers, which take effect in November 2008. Under the new points-based system, businesses wishing to hire skilled or temporary workers from outside the European Union must have signed up to the newly launched register of sponsors to conform to tiers two and five of the new points-based system. Employers without a sponsor’s licence face a period during which they will not have permission to employ migrant workers. As a bottleneck in applications is expected over the autumn, the BA is advising employers who want to be able to issue certificates of sponsorship to migrant workers under tiers two and five in November to apply for a sponsor licence as soon as possible.
