The Honourable Richard Wagner named as the new Chief Justice of Canada

The Prime Minister today announced the Honourable Richard Wagner as the new Chief Justice of Canada.

Following current Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin’s retirement on Dec. 15, Justice Wagner will take the oath of office as Chief Justice and be sworn in as a member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada on Dec. 18.

Justice Wagner was called to the Quebec Bar in 1980 and practiced law until being appointed to the Quebec Superior Court in 2004. He was first appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Oct. 5, 2012.

Justice Wagner’s appointment continues the tradition of alternating the role of Chief Justice between jurists trained in common law and those under Quebec's civil law
