On July 2, 2014, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) published a Final Rule in the Federal Register to place Tramadol into Schedule IV of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).  The DEA began its consideration to schedule Tramadol after a recommendation from the Assistant Secretary for Health of the Department of Health and Human Services, and after an evaluation of other relevant information regarding the abuse potential of Tramadol.

According to the Final Rule, effective August 18, 2014, any person who handles [T]ramadol is subject to the CSA’s schedule IV regulatory controls and administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions applicable to the manufacture, distribution, dispensing, importing, exporting, engagement in research, and conduct of instructional activities, of schedule IV controlled substances," including DEA registration.
