The Commission has mandated ESMA to deliver, by 31 March 2013, technical advice on the evaluation of the Short Selling Regulation (SSR). The advice needs to be backed by statistical analysis and a survey of market participants and competent authorities. It will consider the impact of the SSR on volatility, the effects of temporary restrictions and the appropriateness of thresholds for reporting or publication of short positions and for the use of suspension powers. ESMA must also look into whether to set a threshold for intervention when a significant drop in the price of UCITS and commodity derivatives has occurred. (Source: Request for Technical Advice on SSR)
