A Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting to discuss potential price-fixing activities of major U.S. contact lens makers after requests for an investigation by the American Antitrust Institute suggest that “unilateral pricing policies” used by contact lens makers are against the law.

The American Antitrust Institute stated contact lens makers have set minimum resale prices on some brands of lenses barring discount contact lens sellers like Costco and 1-800 CONTACTS the ability to compete with other retailers like optometrists. The organization claims this type of pricing scheme is illegal as it reduces competition in the market.
