It is estimated that more than $3 billion will be invested by pipeline companies this year for the development of new and expanded oil pipelines. Pipelines servicing the oil sands will add more than one million bpd of capacity for a total of 2.8 million bpd by the end of the year. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers estimates that oil sands production could increase from 1.1 million bpd from 2006 to 3.4 million bpd by 2015, so increases in pipeline capacity are crucial.
