On 9 June Grant Shapps confirmed that by the Autumn, every Government department with significant landbanks will be expected to publish plans to release thousands of acres of previously developed land to housebuilders.

The Government predicts that the plans will release enough public land to build as many as 100,000 homes and support as many as 25,000 jobs by 2015. The amount of previously developed land in question is said to be more than twice the size of Leicester.

At the same time the Homes and Community Agency published a development and land disposal strategy, setting out its plans for "accelerating its land disposal", summarising its landholdings and explaining its approach to disposal decisions. Alongside this is a list of 'accelerated sites' to be sold over the next two years with a capacity of more than 3000 homes.
