Hilary Benn made a written ministerial statement on 7 October about the recent flooding, stating that, between 5 and 7 September, severe flooding (with six inches of rain) affected parts of England, with the most affected areas being Morpeth, Rothbury and Ponteland in Northumberland. One North East, The Regional Development Agency, made £500,000 available to help with immediate costs for affected businesses, and the Bellwin scheme has been activated to cover the immediate local authority costs of responding to the floods. The Environment Agency is immediately undertaking three emergency works in the area.
