Washington, D.C. – Matt Bowsher and Lindsey Crawford have joined Troutman Sanders LLP as partners in the firm’s Multifamily Housing Finance practice in Washington, D.C. Bowsher comes to the firm after nearly 15 years as associate general counsel at Freddie Mac and Crawford after more than 13 years as associate general counsel at Fannie Mae.

Both Crawford and Bowsher have extensive experience in commercial real estate matters, including broad experience representing borrowers and developers prior to their respective tenures at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Their practices focus on lender representation in the origination, sale, and servicing of loans under Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac multifamily programs.

“Matt and Lindsey are well-respected veterans within the multifamily housing finance industry and bring a depth of experience that will greatly benefit our clients and the firm. Our multifamily group has worked closely with them for many years and, by bringing them on our team, we now have more former Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in-house experience than any firm in the nation,” said Ashley Story, chair of the firm’s Real Estate and Finance Department.

Since March 2018, Troutman Sanders has added seven partners in D.C., including William C. O'Neill, Leslie Davis, Michael Carolan (Insurance and Reinsurance, Litigation), Chuck Sensiba (Hydropower), Gregory Parisi (Financial Institutions), and Bowsher and Crawford (Multifamily Housing Finance).

“We are pleased to welcome Lindsey and Matt to our growing team,” said Chad Stackhouse, managing partner of the firm’s D.C. office. “Their addition expands our Multifamily Housing Finance practice and allows us to continue to provide the highest quality of work for our clients.”

Troutman Sanders’ Multifamily Housing Finance practice is the premier nationwide practice representing lenders in the multifamily finance industry. The practice focuses on counseling mortgage banking clients in the origination, sale and servicing of loan transactions sold to secondary market investors — primarily Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as other financial institutions and securitization program participants.

The practice handled nine of the largest multifamily portfolio financings between 2012 and 2018, each of which had an aggregate loan amount of more than $1 billion. In addition, the practice has handled more than 13,000 loan and servicing transactions in the last five years, with a dollar volume of more than $203 billion, including transactions in every U.S. state and the District of Columbia.

“Having worked with Troutman Sanders extensively while at Freddie Mac, I’m honored to join their renowned team, and I look forward to engaging directly with their multifamily clients,” Bowsher said.

“I look forward to helping clients navigate complex multifamily finance transactions with assistance from my colleagues on Troutman Sanders’ premier multifamily finance team,” Crawford said.

Crawford received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia. Bowsher received his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
