The Government has opened consultation to review the current ways in which tips are used to satisfy payment of the National Minimum Wage.

It has invited comments from employers, workers and consumers, to form a picture of the current arrangements to assist the Government in determining the precise nature of any regulatory change relating to the treatment tips, gratuities and cover charges in payment of the national minimum wage. Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of Unite, said: "The Government must take urgent action to close the minimum wage loophole. This will ensure rogue employers can no longer use money left by their customers, to thank those who served them, to boost their profits".
