Following on from its new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, the Auckland Council has recently released a draft solid waste bylaw for public comment.

The aim of the proposed solid waste bylaw is to help the Council achieve the outcomes sought by the recently adopted Plan, including Zero Waste by 2040.  The bylaw will consolidate the existing seven sets of rules across different areas of Auckland into one single bylaw regulating waste and recycling throughout the entire Region.

The Council has indicated that the requirements for putting rubbish out for collection won’t change in the immediate future, particularly as the draft bylaw largely reflects the legacy bylaws of the former Auckland councils.  However, there are changes proposed that may affect waste collectors or transporters, disposal facility operators, resource recovery facility operators, event organisers or managers and managers of multi-unit developments.

A copy of the draft bylaw is available here.

The submission period closes on 3 September.
