Access to Justice
"Lack of comprehension is perhaps the greatest single barrier to justice," State Bar of California, California Commission on Access to Justice.
In 2006, the Alameda County Superior Court, through Judge Gordon Baranco, approached Laney College to consider a training program for language court interpreters. In 2007, spearheaded by Asian American Bar Association (“AABA”) member, Thuy Nguyen, General Counsel at Peralta Community College, Laney College rolled up its sleeves and began the work to make the program a reality. Wendel Rosen partner, Christine K. Noma, who is a former AABA Board member, has served on the Advisory Board for the program since its inception 2007. The program currently is offered in Spanish language interpreting, but Laney is hoping to expand into Cantonese next year.
