According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) “Registration of Food Facilities” website, FDA will not be accepting food facility biennial registration renewals on October 1, 2012, the day such registration was to begin as mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In particular, FSMA amended section 415 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), which requires all domestic and foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food for human or animal consumption to register with FDA. Under FSMA, such facilities are now required to renew their registrations with FDA between October 1st and December 31st of each even-numbered year, beginning 2012. FDA has not provided updated guidance regarding when it will begin accepting such registrations. Instead, FDA recommends that facilities check the agency's website at a later date to learn when registration will become available.
