The Tribunals Service has published further information on the level of awards made by the Employment Tribunal for the period from 1 April 2009 to 21 March 2010.

The largest sum awarded by the Tribunal in 2009/2010 was £729,347 and related to a disability discrimination claim. The highest unfair dismissal award was £234,549. This is in excess of the statutory cap of £65,300 but it is worth remembering that this cap does not apply where the unfair dismissal is for whisteblowing or for raising certain health and safety concerns.

As ever Tribunals are very reluctant to award costs to the successful party. Out of the 236,100 claims accepted by the Tribunal, costs were awarded in only 412 cases (324 of those awards being to the employer).

The maximum, average and median awards for unfair dismissal and discrimination claims are as follows:-
