On Sunday, SEC Inspector General H. David Kotz announced in a letter to Darrell E. Issa (R-CA), Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, that the Office of Inspector General was commencing an investigation into "serious allegations" of the "suspicious circumstances surrounding the filing" of the SEC's civil fraud suit against Goldman Sachs. Mr. Kotz initiated the investigation in response to an April 23 letter from Rep. Issa requesting the Inspector General initiate the investigation, which letter followed an April 20 letter to SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro from Rep. Issa and seven other Republican members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, raising questions regarding the timing of the SEC's suit and requesting the SEC produce documents to the Committee.
