• 8,000 school bus drivers and aides represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1811 went on strike against the New York City school system. Mayor Bloomberg stated that 152,000 students are affected by the strike, accounting for about 11 percent of students in New York City. The dispute centers around job guarantees in the city’s contracts with the school bus companies, requiring successor contractors to retain employees laid off when a previous contractor loses a job bid. The New York Court of Appeals struck down the provisions, holding that they were not designed to save public money, encourage competition, or prevent favoritism. The city has placed 1,100 bus routes out for competitive bidding.
