The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development has released draft regulations under the First Nations Oil and Gas and Moneys Management Act. The purpose of the First Nations Oil and Gas Environmental Assessment Regulations is to establish basic rules and procedures for conducting environmental assessments for oil and gas projects on reserve lands subject to the Act.

The proposed regulations mirror the important aspects of the Canadian Environmental Assesment Act, CEAA, ensuring that if a First Nation chooses to manage and regulate its own oil and gas exploration and exploitation, the rigour of the federal environmental assessment process will be maintained because the regulations are based on the CEAA process; however, the scope of the EA process is changed from addressing national level concerns to community level concerns. Interested person may make comments and representations concerning the proposed regulations by June 25, 2007 to Indian Oil and Gas Canada.
