A group of Waikato Māori are seeking an injunction to stop the partial sale of shares in Mighty River Power Limited. The group, from Pouakani, claims to own the section of the Waikato riverbed where three Mighty River Power dams are located.

Last month, the Supreme Court determined that "the riverbed adjoining the Pouakani lands is not vested in the Crown", opening the way for the Pouakani people to make their claim.  They have been in the area for almost 70 years and are considering charging Mighty River Power Limited for back-dated rent or compensation for the three dams in operation.
