On Thursday night, the Energy & Commerce Committee approved the Waxman-Markey comprehensive global warming-energy legislation by a vote of 33-25. After four days of debate and multiple amendments, Chairman Waxman was able to accomplish his goal of moving the bill out of committee before Memorial Day. Following the vote, Waxman said, "We're just savoring the victory and right now I love every provision in that bill. But I don't love it so much that I wouldn't want to hear what other people have to say about it, and learn more and examine other alternatives that might do better." Other amendments are likely as the House Ways and Means Committee, the Agriculture Committee, and the Science and Natural Resources Committees want to the bill to pass through their committees before it moves to the House floor.
