On 14 February 2014, Insurance Europe published detailed 2012 insurance statistics. Headline findings include a total of €948 billion in claims paid out to customers in 2012 (a 1.4% increase on 2011 statistics). Life insurance benefits accounted for almost two-thirds of this sum. The rate of decline in total premiums is reported to have slowed, with a slight fall of 0.3% (compared to a 2.4% decrease reported for 2011). The 2012 decrease was thought to be driven by a 1.2% decline in life premiums, although this figure represents a recovery from the 6% decline reported in 2011. Insurance Europe reports that European insurers had an investment portfolio worth €8.4 trillion in 2012, making them Europe's largest institutional investors.
