• Following a contentious campaign, including unfair labor practice charges alleging that the employers hired “union buster” consultants to engage in surveillance, coercion, and threating conduct, truck drivers at the Port of New York and Port of New Jersey nevertheless voted to be represented by the Teamsters union. The 112 driver-unit is comprised of employees of Toll Global Forwarding, a subsidiary of an Australian company. The unit is somewhat unusual, as most truck drivers at the ports are classified as independent contractors, and as such, are not eligible to seek union representation.
  • The Service Employees International Union (“SEIU”) is targeting security contractors for tech companies in the Silicon Valley for organizing campaigns. Union organizers have not yet been successful in the Silicon Valley, although 13 companies in San Francisco have been unionized. The SEIU is actively campaigning against the tech companies, placing ads on public transportation and Facebook aimed at Google employees.
