Analysts have found that businesses covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme used record amounts of UN carbon credits to meet their emission reduction targets last year. Businesses used 20m UN Emission Reduction Units during 2010, covering 7.1 per cent of total EU emissions. It is thought businesses will look to sell the credits, issued via controversial industrial gas projects, before they are banned in 2013. Germany used more credits than any other EU country, followed by Spain and Poland. The Power and Heat sector used 61 per cent of the total number of credits.
