In May, the DH published Governance arrangements for research ethicscCommittees.

This policy document describes what is expected from the research ethics committees (REC) that review research proposals relating to areas of the UK Health Department’s responsibility. It covers principles, requirements and standards. It revises and replaces previous guidance dated 2001.

  • Chapter 2 covers purpose and scope.
  • Chapter 3 covers role and remit.
  • Chapter 4 covers composition and membership.
  • Chapter 5 covers requirements.

There is a helpful reminder at 2.3.5 of the areas where legislation requires REC review of research proposals. Further details can be found in Annex A.
