On September 29, 2008, the Commission released a communication on "future networks and the Internet." In a press release, the EC said it "outlined the main steps that Europe has to take to respond to the next wave of the Information Revolution that will intensify in the coming years due to trends such as social networking, the decisive shift to on-line business services, nomadic services based on GPS and mobile TV, and the growth of smart tags." At the same time, the EC released a working paper on Indexing broadband performance - which benchmarks the overall broadband performance in the Member States by comparing broadband speed, price, competition,and coverage. It also released a consultation paper labeled the "Internet of Things," which outlines challenges and launches a public consultation.
