The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently announced preliminary PCT filing data from 2010. This data is important for understanding trends in international technological innovation and global economic recovery. Overall, patent filings increased 4.8%, reversing a decline from the prior year. While the U.S. filings dropped again, Japan, South Korea, and China experienced major gains (China an astonishing 56.2% and South Korea 20.5%). Germany experienced a slight increase.

Categories of technology, including micro- and nanotechnology, are also counted. WIPO recently also established a search tool for environmentally friendly technologies.
