Yang Guangliang, a former vice-mayor in Guangdong Province is on trial for allegedly accepting bribes totalling US$1.9 million from 1992 to 2009. Mr Yang is said to have also accumulated 34.6 million yuan and €24,000 in personal assets but could not account for how he acquired them. Prosecutors claim he took bribes from hotels and restaurants and waived taxes on their behalf, as well as helping at least three companies acquire land.
