In the September 29, 2008, Federal Register CMS published notice that DNV Healthcare has been approved by CMS as a hospital accrediting organization.

A DNV Healthcare press release states that its accreditation program, known as National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (NIAHO) is the first hospital accreditation program in the United States that integrates the internationally recognized ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the Medicare Conditions of Participation.

DNV Healthcare is the third CMS-approved hospital accrediting organization, joining The Joint Commission and the American Osteopathic Association, and the first organization approved in the past forty years. CMS-approval gives this program “deeming authority” – meaning that hospitals accredited through the DNV Healthcare NIAHO program will be deemed to meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation.
