The EU Parliament adopted yesterday a resolution with recommendations to the Commission on Civil Law Rules on Robotics.

Acknowledging a new industrial revolution related to the development of robots, androids and other manifestations of artificial intelligence (“AI”), MEPs call for the adoption of EU-wide rules to cover the legal and ethical ramifications of such revolution. These rules should govern liability, transparency and accountability. For instance, liability and insurance obligations must be clarified regarding self-driving cars. In addition, specific status for robots and AI should be created without hindering innovation. By the same token, MEPs encourage the creation of a European agency for robotics and AI, to foster the diffusion of ethic, technical and regulatory guidance in the area.
