Senator Bob Bennett (R-UT), a long-time industrial loan company (ILC) supporter, is considering legislation that would somewhat restrict the power of ILCs. While details are not public, Bennett may recommend a ban on interstate branching by commercially owned ILCs. This effort might ward off more restrictive legislation passed by the House in May. The FDIC's moratorium on consideration of ILC applications by commercial companies expires in January 2008, after which the FDIC has signaled it may not continue ILC restrictions without Congress passing a law.
