The United Kingdom’s Department of Energy and Climate Change announced yesterday a ban on construction of coal-fired power plants unless they are built with carbon capture and storage technology. Department Secretary Ed Milliband said “Our new policy framework for clean coal will drive the development of CCS, which will be essential for reducing the impact of coal-fired power stations on the environment.” As part of the new plan, the UK government will fund up to four commercial scale CCS projects.
