SFO speaks on enforcing the Bribery Act: Stuart Alford QC has spoken on SFO's role under the Bribery Act 2010 and how it plans to enforce it. In reaction to criticism that the Act is not being taken seriously, he commented that there have already been prosecutions. He also noted that the Act is not retrospective, and that wrongdoing takes time to discover. He said the US Foreign Corrupt Practice Act had also taken some years to "build up a head of steam". Finally, he spoke about deferred prosecution agreements. He stressed the differences between the US and UK models and said they are not short-cuts to prosecution and will not always be appropriate.
