The European Commission has authorised the proposed acquisition of the network solutions provider 3Com by the IT and technology corporation Hewlett Packard (“HP”), concluding that the union will not obstruct competition within the EEA in the computer networking equipment market. Customers will not be hampered by a lack of choice, as the combined entity will still face competition from several alternative technology providers. Moreover, the merger is not expected to have any significant conglomerate or vertical effects, nor will it be likely to prevent HP's wider customer base from accessing networking equipment produced by other suppliers.
