The state House approved legislation, HB 2044, that would increase the amount people could sue for under Pennsylvania's Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law.

The measure would allow a person who purchases or leases goods or services to sue in the amount of $500 or for actual damages, whichever is greater. Current law limits lawsuit amounts in these cases to $100 or actual damages.

The bill also retains language that gives the courts discretion to award damages up to three times actual damages.
