The recent acquisition by Stericycle of Ecowaste Southwest is raising competition concerns in relation to the collection, processing and disposal of healthcare risk waste in the Bristol region. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has identified concerns that there may not be enough competition in the area to prevent Stericycle’s subsidiary, SRCL, from raising prices or reducing services to hospitals and other public sector customers in the future. In response to these concerns, the OFT decided on 25 August 2011, to refer the matter to the Competition Commission (CC) for a fuller inquiry. The CC has invited evidence on the merger and expects to produce its final report by 8 February 2012.
