The European Commission announced 27 May 2011 that it carried out unannounced inspections two days earlier at the EU premises of several companies active in the manufacturing, supply and distribution of piston engines. Piston engines are used in generator sets, engines for industrial transportation and engines providing mechanical drive. The Commission, accompanied by officials from the relevant national competition authorities, was looking for evidence of whether the companies concerned engaged in anti-competitive practices. The companies concerned have not been identified.
